{"id":373,"date":"2015-11-07T19:18:52","date_gmt":"2015-11-08T03:18:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/?p=373"},"modified":"2015-11-08T18:12:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T02:12:31","slug":"rip-linkstation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/?p=373","title":{"rendered":"RIP LinkStation :("},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My 250GB Buffalo LinkStation has died.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m kinda sad.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember exactly when I purchased this, but the earliest review I can find was from 2006 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smallnetbuilder.com\/nas\/nas-reviews\/28111\">http:\/\/www.smallnetbuilder.com\/nas\/nas-reviews\/28111<\/a>), which makes it about 9 years old.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_172324432.resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-376\" src=\"https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_172324432.resized.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20151107_172324432.resized\" width=\"728\" height=\"1296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_172324432.resized.jpg 728w, https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_172324432.resized-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/kaytat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/IMG_20151107_172324432.resized-575x1024.jpg 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It first started with the dreaded 6 red blink hard drive error.\u00a0 I took the device apart, placed the hard drive into my Ubuntu box, and used xfs_repair to fix the drive.\u00a0 It looked like there were some journal and read errors that were fixed.<\/p>\n<p>I was able to browse the file system while the drive was connected to the Ubuntu box so I thought I was in the clear.\u00a0 But when I reassembled the LinkStation, there was another problem; this time, it was a 4 red blink error.<\/p>\n<p>(Decoding error flashes: <a href=\"http:\/\/buffalo.nas-central.org\/wiki\/Information\/LSProLED\">http:\/\/buffalo.nas-central.org\/wiki\/Information\/LSProLED<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>When I looked at the fan, it was not spinning.\u00a0 I tried a few other PC fans I had lying around, but none of them spun up.\u00a0 I then dusted off the multimeter and found that there was no more 12v supply going into the fan from the 3-pin header.\u00a0 I first suspected a blown fuse (<a href=\"http:\/\/forum.buffalo.nas-central.org\/viewtopic.php?f=39&amp;t=6561\">http:\/\/forum.buffalo.nas-central.org\/viewtopic.php?f=39&amp;t=6561<\/a>) but the multimeter indicated that the fuse was intact and there was 12v coming from the power supply.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, I gave up.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t search for a schematic to try and isolate where the 12v could be cut off.\u00a0 Even if I was able to find the faulty component (or maybe a broken trace), I don&#8217;t have the tools to rework the board.<\/p>\n<p>It was a nice run.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking about keeping the 250GB drive, but if the root cause of all this was in fact some side effect of overheating due to the fan not spinning, I probably shouldn&#8217;t trust the integrity of the drive.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for the 9 year uptime, Mr. Buffalo LinkStation LS-GL.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My 250GB Buffalo LinkStation has died.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m kinda sad.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember exactly when I purchased this, but the earliest review I can find was from 2006 (http:\/\/www.smallnetbuilder.com\/nas\/nas-reviews\/28111), which makes it about 9 years old.
